BBL HERO in Wiesbaden — broadband light for pigment spots and redness

Brown spots, red veins, an uneven complexion: BBL HERO is new-generation broadband light and acts precisely on what gives the skin its uneven colour. At the private medical practice of Hanna Kohlert in Wiesbaden, we have been using the Sciton system since November 2026 — physician-led, with a cooled handpiece and a programme that suits your skin: pigment, vessels, Forever Young, Forever Clear or SkinTyte.

What is BBL HERO — and how does it differ from classic IPL?

BBL stands for BroadBand Light. The device emits short pulses of light whose wavelengths are selected via filters so that they are absorbed by specific colours in the skin: by the brown melanin in pigment spots or by the red haemoglobin in dilated small veins. The surrounding tissue absorbs hardly any of the light. The treated structure heats up briefly, is broken down by the body, and the skin subsequently appears more even.

The principle is familiar from classic IPL technology. BBL HERO by Sciton is a further development that differs in three respects: the pulses are delivered significantly faster, so that a face or décolleté is treated in a few minutes. The handpiece glides across the skin in motion, which distributes the energy more evenly and avoids streaks or missed zones. And the crystal is cooled, so that the skin surface stays protected during treatment and the sensation is milder than with older systems. Anyone who has had an IPL treatment before usually experiences BBL HERO as quicker and more comfortable.

What BBL HERO is used for in our practice

The programmes at a glance

Pigment treatment

The light targets brown spots. These darken in the days that follow, briefly look like coffee grounds on the skin and then flake off finely. One to three sessions are usually sufficient. Prices per session: face €440, neck €350, décolleté €380, hands €240, forearms €350, full legs €590.

Vascular treatment

Here the light is absorbed by the red pigment in the blood; dilated small veins and widespread redness usually recede over one to three sessions. Face with fine veins €290, with pronounced veins €350; cherry angiomas up to 20 lesions €290, 21 to 50 lesions €390.

Forever Young

The most comprehensive programme: pigment, redness and a stimulation of skin renewal in one session. Forever Young is usually planned as a series of three treatments about four weeks apart and then refreshed once or twice a year — also preventively, when the skin still shows few spots. Face €450, face and neck €590, face, neck and décolleté €720, hands €270.

Forever Clear

Blue light acts against the bacteria involved in acne; further wavelengths calm inflammation. The treatment works without medication and is carried out in several sessions at short intervals. Cheeks €120, face €220, back or shoulders €340. For how this fits into our acne concept, see acne treatment in Wiesbaden.

SkinTyte

Infrared light evenly warms the deeper layers of the skin and thereby stimulates the formation of new collagen. The skin may appear firmer over the following weeks; usually three to five sessions are planned. Face €270, face and décolleté €470.

Local treatment

For a single spot or a single small vein: €120 (pigment or vessel) or €200 for both — a good way to get to know the procedure.

How a BBL HERO treatment works

Medical pre-consultation

We assess skin type, degree of tan and the areas to be treated, rule out contraindications and define the programme. We do not treat suspicious pigmented lesions; these should first be clarified dermatologically.

Preparation

The skin is cleansed, you are given protective goggles, and a cooling gel is applied to the skin. For sensitive areas, a numbing cream is possible.

Light pulses

The cooled handpiece glides over the skin. Each pulse feels like a brief, warm snap. A face is treated in about 15 to 20 minutes.

Soothing and aftercare

To finish, we cool the skin and apply sunscreen. What you should bear in mind at home is set out in our aftercare for BBL and MOXI.

Sessions, downtime and what happens afterwards

Immediately after treatment, the skin is usually slightly reddened and feels warm, similar to after a day in the wind. This generally subsides within a few hours; make-up is possible again the same or the next day. Pigment spots darken over a few days and then come away as fine flakes. Treated veins may briefly be more visible before they fade. First effects appear after days; effects on collagen and skin structure take several weeks. How many sessions make sense depends on the findings: often one for individual spots, usually three for widespread pigmentation or Forever Young. For a 3-session package, we grant a 15% discount on the individual price.

Season, sun and skin type

Broadband light is absorbed by melanin — including the melanin in tanned skin. That is why we prefer to treat in the low-sun season and only if the skin has seen no sun or sunbed in the preceding weeks. After treatment, consistent sun protection with SPF 50 over several weeks is important, otherwise new spots can form. Darker skin types are treated with adjusted settings, or in individual cases we recommend an alternative such as the MOXI laser, which works on texture rather than colour.

Limits and possible side effects

BBL HERO is not a procedure for every skin change. Melasma, a hormonally driven pigmentation, can actually increase with light and is treated only after careful consideration. Possible side effects are temporary redness, swelling, small crusts, rarely blisters or a temporarily lighter or darker pigmentation. With correct settings these risks are low, but not zero — which is why treatment with us takes place only after a medical consent discussion.

Cost of BBL HERO in Wiesbaden

Prices apply per session, incl. 19 % VAT, billed according to the German medical fee schedule (GOÄ). A local treatment starts at €120; the full-area programmes range from €240 to €720 depending on the area. If you would like to combine BBL HERO with the MOXI laser, you will find the package prices on the page BBL & MOXI Wiesbaden. The exact amount is determined after the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Is BBL HERO the same as IPL?

The basic principle is related: filtered broadband light that is absorbed by colour in the skin. BBL HERO is a newer development from Sciton with a faster pulse rate, a gliding handpiece for even energy distribution and a cooled crystal. In practice, this means shorter treatment times and a milder sensation than with many older IPL devices.

Does treatment with BBL HERO hurt?

Most people describe each pulse as a brief, warm snap, comparable to an elastic band on the skin. Thanks to the cooling of the handpiece, this remains easy to tolerate. On sensitive areas such as the upper lip or neck, we cool additionally or apply a numbing cream beforehand. After the session, the skin feels warm for about an hour.

How many sessions do I need?

That depends on the findings. A single spot or a single small vein often needs only one session. For widespread pigmentation or redness we usually plan one to three treatments, and for the Forever Young programme three, about four weeks apart. After that, one to two top-up sessions per year are usually enough to maintain the result.

Can I have BBL HERO in summer?

We advise against it. Tanned skin also absorbs the light, which compromises effectiveness and safety. The ideal time is October to April. If you would like to be treated in summer, you must consistently avoid the sun in the weeks before and after and use SPF 50 daily; we discuss this honestly in the preliminary consultation.

How much does BBL HERO cost in Wiesbaden?

A localised treatment of individual spots or small veins starts at €120. Pigment treatment of the face costs €440, vascular treatment €290 or €350, Forever Young for the face €450. All prices are per session incl. 19% VAT and are billed according to the GOÄ; with the 3-session package you receive a 15% discount.

Who is BBL HERO not suitable for?

We do not treat tanned skin, pregnant women, people taking photosensitising medication or with active skin infections in the area, or conspicuous or changing pigmented moles — these should first be assessed by a dermatologist. For melasma and very dark skin types, we decide on an individual basis and suggest an alternative where needed.

As with any medical treatment, side effects and risks cannot be ruled out. We inform you about individual risks, possible alternatives and the course you can expect in a personal medical consultation before every treatment.
